pitch: A Memory Called Empire
a pitch i wrote for a book club:
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
"This book is dedicated to anyone who has ever fallen in love with a culture that was devouring their own."
the main character was appointed as the ambassador for her small space station and sent to the heart of the empire bordering her home. she has three missions: find out why her predecessor suddenly died; sort out whatever mess said predecessor left in the fifteen years since his last update; and maybe keep the empire from annexing her home, if at all possible? the ambassador also has complicated feelings toward the empire: she loves its language and culture, but at the same time its people look down on her and threaten her home.
