Ted Chiang plays with such fascinating ideas and concepts in his stories and seemingly in a super intelligent way (i say seemingly because i'm dumb so i'm not the best judge, but from my perspective down here it looks like he's doing some pretty clever stuff up there). but it's not just sciency-oriented hard sci-fi; it's people-oriented. all the world-shattering discoveries and developments he writes about, it's always about what it means to individual people. there's so much heart in his stories.
