i told my mother that i can cook more often, if someone else chooses the vegetables. i expected to get a selection of common familiar veggies that i could just toss into the wok with ginger, garlic, onion and soy sauce (and maybe Shaoxing wine), to serve with rice.

what she gave me was a cassava and a fennel bulb.

i have never cooked either of these before so i was a bit apprehensive. particularly after learning how toxic raw cassava is (i'm still hoping i didn't give anyone cyanide poisoning...). but i found a recipe for cassava chips and i stir-fried the fennel after blanching it. both turned out very tasty, everyone was full of praise.

i got a challenge and i won gloriously.
