Taina's rating system for the coolness of phonetic systems:

• +1 point for /ɲ/
• +1 point for /ɯ/
• +1 point for /ɤ/
• +1 point for /ɨ/
• +(n–1) points for the number of phonemic affricates
• +2 points for syllable-initlal /ŋ/
• +2 points for distinctive palatalisation
• +2 points for distinctive aspiration

Standard Mandarin: 7 points for 6 affricates /t͡s t͡sʰ t͡ɕ t͡ɕʰ ʈ͡ʂ ʈ͡ʂʰ/ and distinctive aspiration
Northern Vietnamese: 7 points for /ɲ ɯ ɤ/, syllable-initial /ŋ/, and distinctive aspiration
Finnish: 0 points
Russian: 4 points for /ɨ/, 2 affricates /t͡s t͡ɕ/, and distinctive palatalisation
Māori: 2 points for syllable-initial /ŋ/
most varieties of English: 1 point for 2 affricates /t͡ʃ d͡ʒ/
