in my language, marriage is an alliance
and in another, alliance is a wedding ring

it seems right:
you make a promise of mutual support
and to face life together
allies help each other through challenges
and both parties benefit

the formation of an alliance is a beginning,
but not the beginning:
you are well past the overtures, the negotiations
have had time to be sure
that you’ve found a worthy ally

it also means marriage is not the finish line
not the goalpost at the end
an alliance, by its nature, is formed
with the future in mind

now you wear the alliance on your finger
and continue moving forward arm in arm
armed against the world
