year and decade lists
Jan. 2nd, 2020 09:18 pmthere's plenty of Big Special Days that i don't care for (like my birthday, which is really not such a big deal and i wish people would forget), but new year isn't that bad. on one hand time is fake, and stuff just keeps on continuing no matter what number we stick onto it, but on the other hand it's an occasion like any other for (intro/retro)spection.
i'm sure everyone is sick of "best of the decade" lists by now, but you don't have to read this. just because no one cares doesn't mean i can't have my fun in this little play corner of mine.
best books of the decade
i've tried to avoid bias toward my most recent favourites as much as possible. some of these are books that aren't favourites (anymore) but had a deep impact in some way. i didn't include some books that used to be top favourites that i now don't really care for anymore.
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
this has been my top favourite of all time since 2015, along with the rest of the Imperial Radch trilogy and Ann Leckie's other novels.
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
so, so, so good. the characters are super interesting, the plot is engaging, the worldbuilding feels Alive, and every single sentence is breathtakingly beautiful.
The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin
this is the second part of the Three Body trilogy, and while i also love the other two, this is the one with the Dark Forest Theory that turned my universe upside out and inside down.
The Merro Tree by Katie Waitman
i first read this in like 2012 and have reread it many times, and every single time i stay up late at night because i MUST finish it. it has gay aliens, or gayliens,
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
anthologies are difficult to rate but this one has a very high story:breathtaking-story ratio.
Itinéraire d'enfance by Dương Thu Hương
it is kind and friendly and inspiring, and it lingers with me.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
was my favourite until i read Ancillary Justice, also beautifully written
Invisible Planets and Broken Stars edited and translated by Ken Liu
anthologies are difficult (see above), but overall i love both of these. "Invisible Planets" by Hao Jingfang is one of my favourite short stories of all time, if not *the* favourite
best songs of the decade
that is, songs that i have listened to last decade that particularly stand out. similar principle as with the books, but the order is more chronological.
Fall Out Boy - "Centuries"
Muse - "Plug In Baby"
Muse - "Starlight"
The Neighborhood - "Sweater Weather"
Wanting - "You Exist In My Song"
Wanting - "Jar Of Love"
Shi Shi - "That Last Day"
Tiên Tiên - "Đi Về Dâu"
Bệt band - "Hãy Nói Đi"
R-Chord ft. Diana Wang - "Love Doesn't Need To Pretend"
Korpiklaani - "Surma"
au départ j'avais l'intention d'ajouter encore mes bonnes résolutions pour le nouvel an (qui sont surtout les continuations de choses que j'essayais déjà de faire) mais je n'en ai que trois
